As the pre-eminent resource in the pre-K-12 field, -Education Week -engages readers with important education news, meaningful analysis, outside opinion, and distinctive explanatory and investigative journalism across a range of digital and print platforms as well as through live and virtual events.Education Week -has been described as a strategic national asset and has provided particularly critical service throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Its reach is unique in its breadth and depth, serving policymakers and practitioners both within the pre-K-12 system and across the range of government agencies, legislative bodies, state executives, and public and private institutions that effectively set the agenda for American elementary and secondary education. -The organization successfully relaunched its core platform, edweek.org, in December 2020 with an audience-centric design and a new CMS, along with other new technologies. Work is underway to relaunch a major digital product, marketbrief.edweek.org.EPE is an entrepreneurial non-profit media organization with a double bottom-line focus. It combines a mission orientation with a strong desire to continuously improve its products, increase its impact, and ensure its own sustainability, all with the goal of improving U.S. pre-K-12 education. About 75 percent of EPE's revenue comes from subscribers and advertisers, and more than 80% of this is generated from digital products and services. Remaining support comes from a committed group of philanthropic funders.EPE is committed to the idea that investing in excellent journalism will generate reader revenue, and that putting readers first aligns the organization's business goals with EPE's journalistic mission. Edweek.org serves 1.8 million registered users who generate close to -4 million page views each month and its work is regularly highlighted through robust social media channels and a variety of partnerships. - The print edition reaches more than 100,000 subscribers and readers. -Position Summary -The Managing Editor for Visuals and Immersive Experiences (ME, VEX) is a senior level newsroom leader who also owns strategic, cross-organization responsibilities, with the goal of helping expand our audience, deepen connections with new and loyal readers, and positively impact business results through innovative storytelling and purposeful visuals work.The ME, VEX will work with the Editor-in-Chief of Education Week, the Managing Editor of EdWeek Market Brief, and other senior newsroom leaders to help drive coverage that conveys complex information in visually compelling and unconventional ways, often by collaborating with our reporters and editors to find interesting approaches to major national news developments in K-12 education.The ME, VEX also works with senior leaders and managers from across the organization to guide our user experience efforts, to sustain our visual and brand standards, and to create strategies for effectively leveraging our visuals work and team to advance -broader -company goals in journalism and in business.S(he) will lead and manage the VEX team, helping develop them and meet their story presentation goals while they support a range of other work for our three product lines: Education Week, EdWeek Market Brief, and EdWeek Top School Jobs. The VEX team works across all platforms, including edweek.org, newsletters, a printed newspaper, and social media.The ideal candidate will be a strategic, creative thinker who is agile and adept at planning and delivering high-impact visuals work across the newsroom and other parts of the organization. S(he) will also help advance our focus on the user/audience by guiding our user experience efforts, will ensure a consistent and cohesive approach to our visual presentation, and will bring proven leadership skills and a collaborative spirit. -Major Duties and Responsibilities -

Serve as the editorial leader for news visuals for Education Week and EdWeek Market Brief, working with editors, reporters, the EdWeek Research Center, and the VEX team to develop and produce exceptional visual journalism.Develop/maintain strong familiarity with local, state, and national education news, issues, and trends.Own the organization's reader-centric visuals strategy across content types and platforms, with the ability to effectively incorporate monetization strategies.Lead design strategy and visual approaches for the organization's suite of digital products and help us develop our product strategy and roadmap for key products in partnership with editorial, business and technology leaders.Partner with revenue, editorial, and technology colleagues to ideate and create new and innovative features and capabilities.Advance the organization's data visualization work, including -charts, graphs, infographics, and maps.Ensure visual consistency by overseeing our style guides, visual identity and brand standards, and design systems across platforms and products.Participate in user research and stakeholder interviews, and contribute to mockup, wireframe, sitemap, user flows, and prototype work that adheres to user-centered design principles.Manage, coach, and develop the VEX team.Manage the VEX expense budget. -Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
At least 7 years of experience producing "new school" digital visual journalism, with at least 4 years of people management experience.Vision for how design can further storytelling, drive brand recognition, and deliver results.Experience maintaining brands.Strong collaborator, problem-solver, and negotiator, with experience leading and helping build strong partnerships across teams, and interest in the revenue goals of an organization.Excellent people management skills and proven ability to inspire, enable, energize, and coach a creative team while cultivating a culture of purposeful innovation.Passionate about identifying and solving problems that will have a positive impact for our users and our business.Leadership style that balances determination and drive with flexibility and teamwork.Strong presentation and writing skills; versatile, with a quick metabolism.Excellent time management, organizational and prioritization skills.Can seamlessly balance focus on tactical details and big picture strategy.Strong desire and ability to embrace and learn new technologies and ability to think strategically about use of new and emerging technologies.Knowledge of and experience with UI/UX a plus (e.g., process and research techniques, user interviews, usability testing, persona creation and journey mapping).Benefits & PerksEducation Week is a vibrant workplace that is conveniently located in the heart of downtown -
