Job Description: The Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion will be responsible for leading Child Trends' coordinated efforts towards increased diversity, equity, and inclusion in our workplace. Key areas of responsibility will include designing, implementing, and leading effective initiatives to build greater equity, diversity and inclusion in the workplace; working with HR to increase the diversity of our workforce; supporting researchers in expanding equity-informed research; and informing equitable communications strategies. This position will report to the President of Child Trends as part of senior management and will work in close collaboration with HR and the COO. Role and Responsibilities Strategic Leadership (40%) * Set diversity, equity, and inclusion priorities with organizational leaders then facilitate accountability to those goals. * Provide strategic leadership to organizational leaders, departments, and project teams by creating, implementing, and evaluating new DEI strategies. * Recommend changes to organization policies and procedures -- drawing from research on best practices, building on current organizational efforts, and working with relevant managers and oversee implementation of policy changes. * Participate as a member of key organizational leadership meetings to facilitate organizational change. * Collaborate with VP of Communications on communication strategy and help develop standards and systems that support an increased focus on equity and inclusion in our research products and related communications. * Coordinate and build upon existing efforts to increase equity and inclusion focus in research, both ongoing projects and proposals for new work. * Work with the President to articulate Child Trends' vision and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Workforce Development (60%) * Build the skills of individual staff, teams, and departments to recognize and interrupting the effects of oppression in interpersonal interactions and organizational structures. * Develop and deliver or arrange for trainings and ongoing learning opportunities on diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace and in conceptualizing, conducting, and communicating research. * Develop a strategic DEI plan with accountability measures, collaborate with HR to collect and analyze workforce data to guide initiatives, and report out to staff on those measures. * Partner with HR to innovate strategies to successfully recruit, employ and retain an intentionally diverse workforce. Qualifications and Requirements Knowledge * Demonstrated understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion issues in the workplace (e.g. hiring and retention, access and equity, policy and legal dimensions of diversity, etc.). * Excellent command of historical and contemporary diversity, equity, and, inclusion concepts and issues (e.g., race/ethnicity, sexual orientation and gender identity, disability). * Experience leading significant organizational change within pre-existing organizational structures. Experience working in a soft-money organization a plus. * Demonstrated knowledge of diversity, equity and inclusion literature from a social science field (e.g., social psychology, sociology, organizational development). Abilities * Uses sound judgement in handling confidential information. * Has the ability to identify issues and root causes, as well as provide solutions. * An individual with a high degree of integrity. * Strong emotional intelligence. * The ability to act and make decisions in a transparent and consistent manner. * Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders with competing perspectives or interests. * Superior communication skills, both oral and written. Skills * Effective interpersonal and communication skills both one-on-one and in large group settings. * Effective organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills. * Successful record of leadership and experience in advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion within a complex organization. * Demonstrated ability to manage and work effectively within a budget. * Demonstrated ability to work effectively with staff across multiple office environments.
