National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, Maryland Position Description: The Center for Cancer Research (CCR) is home to nearly 250 basic and clinical research groups located on two campuses just outside of Washington, D.C. CCR is part of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and makes up the largest component of the research effort at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Centrally supported by long-term funding and a culture of complete intellectual freedom, CCR scientists are able to pursue the most important and challenging problems in cancer research. We collaborate with academic and commercial partners and advocacy groups across the world in efforts to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer and HIV/AIDS. The CCR research portfolio covers the full spectrum of biological and biomedical research. Our work ranges from basic to translational and clinical, and our clinical trials are conducted in the NIH Clinical Center, the world's largest hospital dedicated to clinical research that offers a robust infrastructure to support CCR's patients on an estimated 250 open studies. The success of CCR is grounded in an exceptionally strong discovery research program that provides the foundation for the seamless translation of insights from bench to bedside. The Center for Cancer Research (CCR) seeks to build a diverse biomedical workforce that reflects national demographics. To that end, CCR is seeking a dynamic candidate to serve as its first Diversity Advisor to the Director. The incumbent shall serve as the principal advisor and primary resource to the Director and senior leadership to develop and guide CCR's organizational strategy for recruitment and retention of diverse candidates and new and strengthened institutional mechanisms to ensure an inclusive and supportive environment for underrepresented minority (URM) faculty. Efforts will focus on areas such as faculty recruitment, organizational development, and monitoring and reporting of progress. The incumbent shall serve as the primary division representative at the NCI and NIH level on these matters. Duties include: Outreach and Recruitment

  • Proactively builds a national and international network through which diverse candidates for faculty positions may be identified;
  • Works with the faculty recruitment team to ensure end-to-end inclusive recruiting of faculty;
  • Engages with the CCR communications team to develop effective tactics related to recruitment and retention of diverse candidates and staff;
  • Engages with search committees to assist with outreach to create a diverse applicant pool and encourage consideration of such applicants;
  • Identifies and develops new programs or initiatives to bolster organizational diversity;
  • Represents the organization through formal presentations and meetings with key constituencies and with institutions and groups identified as sources for potential diverse applicants; and,
  • Works with search firms to identify diverse applicants. Organizational Development
    • Identifies systemic organizational barriers to achieving the goal of a diverse faculty and develop strategies to recruit and retain a diverse workforce;
    • Monitors and recommends actions to remedy workplace and career development issues identified as barriers by URM faculty;
    • Identifies best practices for the recruitment and retention of URM researchers and other diverse populations and catalyzes leveraging them;
    • Actively engages faculty and leadership to further behaviors, attitudes, and policies that support diversity, equity, and a welcoming and inclusive culture; and,
    • Assesses the need for, and recommends training initiatives on, cultural competency, gender differences, disability, sexual harassment, and other topics designed to increase awareness and support of equity and inclusion values.-- Monitoring and Reporting
      • Establishes and maintains an internal reporting system to allow for effective methods to measure and report program effectiveness;
      • Develops key indicators to assess progress and report regularly to the Director and key leadership; including career and leadership advancement of URM faculty and diverse populations; and,
      • Prepares reports for the CCR Director for the NIH Equity Council and other entities on subjects related to workforce diversity.-- About this position
