Maryland Position Description: The National Institute of
Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) of the National Institutes of
Health is searching for an Animal Program Director, Attending
Veterinarian and Chief of the Comparative Medicine Branch (CMB).
CMB provides a broad range of services and collaborative support
for NIEHS intramural research programs. The incumbent will be
responsible for an AAALAC accredited animal care and use program
and for support of NIEHS animal research programs that engage in
molecular, reproductive, neurological and immunological research as
well as studying the effects of environmental agents in order to
develop methods of disease prevention and treatment. CMB is
responsible for management of the NIEHS animal care and use
program, which includes facility management, animal procurement and
housing, animal health surveillance and disease diagnosis, clinical
veterinary services, rodent breeding, technical and surgical
assistance, animal imaging, behavioral phenotyping, quality
assurance of animal food, bedding, and water, and providing
professional advice to the institute on animal related issues. CMB
supports the scientific staff by providing training for
investigators and technicians, quality assurance support for
research projects, consultation with investigators planning animal
research projects, and administrative and professional staffing for
the NIEHS Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC). The CMB plans and
conducts research appropriate to these functions and participates
in the training of residents in an ACLAM approved laboratory animal
medicine training program. The NIEHS Animal Care and Use Program is
fully accredited by AAALAC. CMB supports over 200 active animal
research projects for scientists in the Divisions of Intramural
Research and the National Toxicology Program. A daily inventory of
over 40,000 rodents is maintained. The Branch ensures that all
animal use is performed humanely and in accordance with Public
Health Service Policy and federal regulations. The incumbent will
serve as Animal Program Director, Attending Veterinarian, and Chief
of the Comparative Medicine Branch for NIEHS with responsibility
for maintaining the AAALAC accredited animal care program; will
represent NIEHS on the NIH Animal Program Directors Committee and
serve as attending veterinarian on the NIEHS ACUC; will actively
support the NIEHS mission, participate in ongoing planning and
management discussions to successfully resolve pertinent issues and
challenges, participate in long range strategic planning processes
to develop and implement effective goals and directions for the
animal care program and provide information and recommendations to
the Scientific Director; and will conduct/collaborate in research
relative to the mission of CMB and the institute. This position is
classified as a Senior Scientist, an NIH employee that manages of a
large Institute or Center (IC) research program/department with
responsibility for substantial resources. A Senior Scientist may be
granted independent research resources, which are subject to review
by the IC Board of Scientific Counselors (BSC). Qualifications:
Minimum qualifications include a DVM/VMD from an AVMA-accredited or
approved college, a current license to practice veterinary medicine
in any state in the United States and board certification by the
American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine. In addition,
applicants must demonstrate a proven record of management and
operation of an AAALAC accredited animal care program of similar
magnitude and complexity and demonstrated experience meeting all
regulations and policies pertaining to animal care and use.
Applicants must possess demonstrable experience and skills in
management and supervision, budget oversight, resource allocation,
facility design, rodent colony management and disease control. In
addition, applicants must possess the ability to analyze,
prioritize and delegate resources while managing multiple projects
and programs. Expertise and experience should include demonstration
of positive and collegial interactions with staff at all levels and
with scientific staff to promote and facilitate their research;
scholarly contributions in the field of laboratory animal medicine
or other related areas of science, in addition to professional
recognition and leadership within the field of laboratory medicine
(e.g. contributions to AAALAC, AALAS, ASLAP or ACLAM).
Salary/benefits: This is a federal full-time equivalent position,
and a comprehensive benefits package is available. Salary will be
commensurate with experience, qualifications and accomplishments. A
