Job Description:
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is the lead
federal agency for research on mental disorders. NIMH is one of the
27 Institutes and Centers that make up the National Institutes of
Health (NIH), the largest biomedical research agency in the world.
NIH is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
(HHS).
Position OverviewThe Office of Clinical Research (OCR) at the
National Institute of Mental Health is recruiting for a Deputy
Director at its Rockville, MD, site. The Office provides
institute-wide coordination of oversight for NIMH-funded clinical
research studies and provides strategic guidance and
recommendations to NIMH leadership about clinical research
initiatives.
The Office provides expertise in human research protection, data
and safety monitoring, clinical trial operations, recruitment
monitoring, and good clinical practice/protocol compliance
monitoring. In addition, the Office provides consultations to NIMH
staff, provides education about clinical research oversight, and
serves as a liaison betweenNIMH and other NIH Institutes/Centers
and other federal agencies such as the Office for Human Research
Protections (OHRP).
The Deputy Director supports the Office of Clinical Research's
oversight function at NIMH with a clinical
perspective.Responsibilities include:
1. Serve as a critical advisor for the Director of the Office of
Clinical Research on clinical research issues with a particular
focus on the design of clinical trials, the protection of
participants in research, data and safety monitoring, and overall
clinical trial operations.2. Assist the OCR Director in overseeing
the continuous evaluation of NIMH's national and international
efforts concerning all aspects of clinical research oversight and
monitoring.3. In collaboration with the OCR Director, develop
strategies to overcome unforeseen difficulties in clinical research
studies with innovative solutions to ensure progress toward
goals.4. Provide medical and clinical oversight for human research
protections in clinical research protocols and during on-site
quality assurance evaluations of NIMH-funded clinical research
studies.
The incumbent reports to the Director of the Office of Clinical
Research, working with the Office branches: The Clinical Trials
Operations Branch and the Human Research Protection Branch.
QualificationsCompetitive candidates are expected to be
accomplished physicians who understand how biomedical and
behavioral research is performed. Candidates are expected to have
clinical expertise in mental health with the ability to provide
expert advice and consultation as needed on NIMH initiatives for
clinical trials, including the scope, design, and standards for
access and sharing of data, as well as the development of
public-private partnerships tosupport clinical research. Candidates
with a publication record, prior research experience, and evidence
of a familiarity with current literature in interdisciplinary
neuroscience and psychiatry related to mental illness are
preferred. Supervisory experience is preferred. This position
requires working both independently and collaboratively and offers
opportunities to impact priorities, develop new initiatives and
contribute to the advancement of a national program of research.

(M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) with board
certification in psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, or
neurology.
