Description
This Health-Care Provider will support the mission of the
Department of Radiology/Oncology Services at Walter Reed National
Military Medical Center (WRNMMC)
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Shall be able to read, write, speak and understand English well
enough to effectively communicate with all patients and other
health care providers.
2. Shall be knowledgeable of equipment and supply terminology and
skill sufficient to identify and use necessary equipment and
supplies properly and to communicate proper use with nurses,
medical staff, patients, and family members.
3. Shall be sufficiently skilled to teach patients proper self-care
and to motivate patients and family members to continue the
procedures for promoting rapid healing.
4. Shall be knowledgeable and possess skills necessary to provide
care appropriate to any age-related needs of the patients. The
Contract Oncology- Registered Nurse shall demonstrate knowledge of
the principles of growth and development appropriate to the
appropriate patient population served: Infants, Children,
Adolescent, Adults, and Geriatric (> 65).Assess, coordinate,
facilitate, deliver and evaluate care for infant to geriatric
patients using the nursing process.
5. Assess, coordinate, facilitate, deliver and evaluate care for
infant to geriatric patients.
6. Possess proficient knowledge of a wide range of medical
disorders/conditions, diagnostic studies and treatments related to
prevention, and detection of illnesses in adults, is desirable.
7. The contracted Oncology- Registered Nurse will be knowledgeable
in professional care theories, principles, practices, and
procedures to perform duties.
8. Knowledge of computer operations and proficiency in the use of
basic word processing, data entry and automated medical
records.
9. Be a U.S citizen.
10. Periodically there are conferences and seminars in different
states/cities outside of the 40 miles radius that they might have
to attend to discuss updates practices/procedures.
SPECIFIC DUTIES/TASKS THE CONTRACT EMPLOYEE SHALL PERFORM:
The contracted Oncology- Registered Nurse will provide the
following services and in strict compliance with standing orders
and protocols set forth by the MTF, and IAW JC guidelines to
include, but will not necessarily be limited to the following:
1. Assist in the case management of cancer patients such as
scheduling appointments and referrals, vascular access, and orders
as appropriate for laboratory, radiology, and pharmacy.
2. Schedule referrals to other clinics, treatment facilities and
ancillary services for total patient care. Assist in counseling and
monitoring patients entering clinical trial protocols. Explain
procedures and treatments to patients and significant others to
allay apprehension and gain cooperation and support.
3. Obtain initial health history of cancer patients, including
obtaining recent hospital summaries, pathology reports, operation
records, laboratory, radiological, and pharmaceutical information
related to patient encounters to screen for disease and surgically
related problems .Serve as intermediary for community resources to
aid oncology patients and assist in providing ongoing patient
education programs.
4. Provide information to institution or national headquarters on a
routine basis for the follow up of patients on protocols.
5. Provide specialized nursing care to oncology patients as a
member of an interdisciplinary team.
6. Work productively as a part of a team of professionals to assess
the effectiveness of existing programs and plan for providing
further development of patient care programs.
7. Provide individual and family counseling for cancer
patients.
8. Assist in maintaining a clean, safe clinic environment by
promoting safe practices in ongoing quality assurance.
Qualifications
1. Degree/Education: Possess a Bachelor of Science in Nursing
Degree. Possess current Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN)
certification.
2. Certifications in addition to Basic Life Support: Possess
current certification as a Clinical/Medical Dosimetrist to practice
in any state or in the District of Columbia. Certification shall be
updated annually with a copy provided to the COR. This can be
waived by the Service Chief in the event an employee has
considerable experience in medical dosimetry with the highest of
professional recommendations.
3. Experience: Possess a minimum of three (3) years of RN
experience within the preceding five (5) years with experience in
radiation oncology.
4. Licensure/Registration: Possess a current, unrestricted license
to practice nursing in any one of the fifty States, the District of
Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam or the U.S. Virgin
Islands. The contractor is responsible for complying with all
applicable state licensing regulations. Contractor nurses shall
furnish copies of all State nursing licenses held within the last
five (5) years.
