The National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) offers an intellectually stimulating environment where the world's top scientists, skilled software developers, and others work together to solve challenging problems and literally help to accelerate cures for diseases! NLM's wide range of applications, platforms (node, python, Django, C++, you name it) and environments (big data [petabytes], machine learning, multiple clouds) serve more users than almost any other US Government Agency, according to MSC is seeking multiple User Interface (UI) Designers to join our NLM team; position level (Junior through Senior) is commensurate with experience. In this role, you will help to design and implement engaging graphics and user interfaces for NLM offerings. Duties & Responsibilities

  • Design and develop graphics, user interfaces, and other design elements based on user needs analyses, design prototyping, and evaluation.
  • Design and conduct user research activities at regular scheduled intervals throughout the development process using modern methodologies, including stakeholder interviews and usability tests.
  • Create and deliver records, notes, and electronic artifacts collected during design and usability research.
  • Convert research findings, user needs and feedback, and business requirements into actionable tasks in collaboration with extended team members and stakeholders.
  • Iteratively prototype and build clean and intuitive user interfaces and workflows from low-fidelity wireframes through high-fidelity interactive prototypes.
  • Plan interfaces, graphics styling, revisions, and improvements using graphic design, data visualization and user-centered design techniques.
  • Develop and modify style sheets; prepare style sheet code for implementation.
  • Use plain language in application design and development whenever possible.
  • Support development of design system and style guides with team collaboration.
  • Organize and maintain files and create technical documentation for easy handoff to developers and other team members.
  • Ensure implementations follow the U.S. Web Design System and other customer-directed web design, accessibility, and usability standards, including Section 508 compliance.
  • Maintain user-interface and design patterns based on live style guides to support user experience (UX) consistency across all products and throughout the system lifecycle. Requirements
    • Bachelor's degree in Design, Communication, or a related field or equivalent experience
    • 3-5 years of professional experience in creating and implementing UI design in an agile environment
    • Proficient with visual design programs such as Sketch, InVision, Adobe Design Suite, or other design software
    • Experience creating storyboards and site mapping
    • Experience with coding and ability to troubleshoot using HTML, CSS, and comparable languages
    • Solid knowledge of design concepts and best practices including but not limited to: HHS Web Design and Usability Guidelines, the U.S. Web Design System, World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) web standards, human-computer interaction (HCI), usability, user research techniques, data collection, interface design, web design, prototyping, design systems development, and Section 508 compliance
    • Proficient with design tools such as Sketch, InVision, Adobe Design Suite, or other design software
    • Skilled in working with HTML5 and CSS3
    • Ability to articulate design requirements to be used by the development team
    • Experienced in applying responsive web design techniques to mitigate cross-browser and cross-device inconsistencies
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Ablity to obtain and maintain a Public Trust Clearance
    • Previous experience supporting the NIH is a plus.
    • Due to our contractual requirements and federal orders, including an Executive Order from the White House and an emergency regulation from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the position for which you are applying requires that you provide proof of your vaccination status.
