Start Date: ASAP About the Position Duties of the Position Include
All clinical and research nutrition services will be under the
direction of a Registered Dietitian credentialed by the Clinical
Center, NIH. The contractor will provide services once training has
been completed and competency has been established. All clinical
documentation in the Clinical Research Information System (CRIS)
will be audited, reviewed for compliance, and co-signed/co-authored
by a Registered Dietitian credentialed by the Clinical Center, NIH.
Provides nutrition research services to support clinical research
protocols. Maintains patient appointments and schedules on
calendars. Educates patients on keeping food records and completing
questionnaires. Reviews research food recalls, records, and
questionnaires with patients. Codes research food recalls, records,
and questionnaires. Reviews research food recalls, records, and
questionnaires coded by other staff for accuracy and completeness.
Conducts body composition assessments, including utilizing skinfold
calipers, tape measures, and bioelectrical impedance. Plans,
implements, and manages metabolic diets or special nutrient
controlled diets that are a component of research protocols. This
includes utilizing ProNutra to create diets, assign diets, and
print menus, checklists, and labels and providing menu packets to
the Metabolic Kitchen food service staff. Plans menus for complex
clinical and research diets, monitors meals served for compliance
with physician/protocol diet order, monitors patient’s compliance
with diet order, and manages daily dietary needs of patients. This
includes utilizing CBORD to manage patients’ meal, supplement, and
formula requirements. Collects and records data on amount of food
consumed for clinical calorie counts and research meal
energy/nutrient consumption. Ensures research participant
compliance with research diets. Collaborates with Metabolic Kitchen
food service staff to ensure performance outcomes are met.
Communicates with Metabolic Kitchen food service staff on metabolic
diets, subjects, and delivery schedules. Answers food service
staff’s questions or refers questions to the appropriate staff.
Conducts inventory of goods and supplies for the Metabolic Kitchen
including protocol-required foods and formulas. Places order
requests to ensure adequate supplies to meet protocol requirements.
Maintains nutrient databases for the Metabolic Kitchen, including a
database in ProNutra and a photo repository. Updates the nutrient
databases with nutrient, food composition, labelling, and packaging
information. Collects, organizes, and manages nutrition research
data from a variety of sources for a variety of research protocols.
Downloads and organizes data for protocol teams as requested.
Assists with planning nutrition research services and procedures
related to future protocols. This includes: Menu design per
protocol Creation of spreadsheets needed for energy or nutrient
calculations and other relevant tracking Creation of educational
and assessment materials for screening, patient education, diet
assessment, and anthropometric measures Documentation of protocol
procedures for nutrition staff Screens newly admitted patients and
gains pertinent background information and diet history to assess
the medical and research care priorities. Documents findings in the
patient electronic medical record. Interviews patients to obtain
pertinent background information, diet history, eating patterns,
economic situation, cultural background, and other conditions which
influence food preferences and preparation. Provides patient
education in individual or group classes in accordance with
clinical needs and research protocol requirements on topics such as
prescribed diets, research diets, basic nutrition, drug-nutrient
interactions, and nutrition research components of protocols.
Contributes to program objectives through participation in
workgroups, projects and quality teams. Serves as a first-line
report for problem resolution from patients or staff. Documents
problems, researches solutions, notifies supervisors as needed, and
directs resolution. Attends nutrition and protocol team meetings as
assigned Documents nutrition services in the electronic health
record (Clinical Research Information System). Collects and
organizes quality control data and projects which may include
medical record documentation timeliness and accuracy, food weight
accuracy, tray accuracy, enteral formula preparation accuracy,
scale calibration, and research tool calibration. Investigates
errors or factors reported via the Safety Tracking and Reporting
System (STARS). Actively supports and participates in performance
improvement activities. Assists with providing training and
in-services for professional and nonprofessional staff, dietetic
interns, students, and support personnel. Qualifications The
contractor(s) must have: Bachelor's degree from an accredited
university in Dietetics/Nutrition or related field. Professional
knowledge of the science of nutrition and principles and procedures
required to provide nutrition services to patients Skill in
assessing dietary habits and nutritional status and the ability to
apply this information to the diet prescription and to develop a
dietary plan to meet the requirements of a given protocol or
disease state Ability to instruct a patient/patient family members
or provide group counseling about diet and demonstrated skill in
influencing patient compliance
